Belonging Day 7: Belong to the Present, He Goes Before

Deuteronomy 31:8  (NLT)
“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Do you know the Lord goes before you? How victoriously could we live if we really, really believed that. We could belong to the present instead of the future. Because the future is full of unknowns, it’s like a murky grey cloud. We can’t see through to the other side. It is a lush green valley? Or a seemingly insurmountable peak? If only we knew, we could prepare for it!

So we succumb to our worry and festering, thinking somehow if we work through each potential outcome in our head, we’ll be better equipped to deal with whatever outcome emerges. As if that would really mitigate all of the trials in our lives. We waste so much peace by not dwelling in the truth that God’s Word promises, “the Lord will personally go ahead of you.”

He already knows the future. His plans and how your life will purpose to fit in them.

This is absolutely the theme verse of our household right now. My husband read it to me right after we decided to move to Wisconsin and it has stuck with me. There were so many unknowns and a lot of sacrifices in going. But I sit here now to testify, the Lord has been faithful and will continue to be.

I can see the web of his purposes and connections unfolding. A morning conversation with a friend on the playground, a potential ministry opportunity, new friends for my kids, becoming of spiritual warfare to pray against, invitations to lead worship. He has gone before—and it is amazing to watch him at work.

We can belong to our present because he is the God that controls the future. Rest in that. Live in that. Keep your eyes open for what he is doing around you and walk in peace through the cloud of the unknown.
